In a statement issued on Monday, Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), confirmed the development.
According to him, the electoral body had previously published the personal details of all nominated candidates following party primaries.
By the 11 August 2025 deadline, 17 political parties had submitted the required Form EC9, containing their nominees’ particulars.
Olumekun stated, “The final list of candidates that will contest the 2026 FCT Area Council Election is now public.
This list includes key information such as political party, age, gender, and academic qualifications, and is accessible on our official website and social media channels.”
With the final list now available, INEC made it clear that no further withdrawal or replacement of candidates will be allowed—except in the event of a candidate’s death—in line with Section 34(1) of the Electoral Act.
This decisive move by INEC underscores its commitment to electoral transparency and rule-based processes, ensuring that both political parties and the electorate are fully aware of their options well in advance.
The INEC FCT Election 2026 is expected to be closely watched, especially as Abuja’s local governance plays a crucial role in national policy execution and administrative service delivery.
The Commission’s firm stance against last-minute candidate changes has been praised by civic groups advocating for electoral discipline and clarity.
