In a communiqué issued at the end of its 8th strategic meeting held in Birnin Kebbi, the PDP Northern Support Group described Jonathan as “the only man capable of redeeming the PDP and restoring Nigeria’s unity.”
The two-day meeting, which concluded on Thursday, brought together representatives from all 19 northern states, including zonal secretaries and party supporters.
The communiqué was jointly signed by the group’s Northern Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, and North-West Zonal Secretary, Adamu Narayi.
The group unequivocally declared there would be “no going back on Jonathan in 2027,” insisting that his legacy of peace, democratic conduct, and national stability makes him the ideal candidate to reposition the party.
“Dr Jonathan has never abandoned the PDP. He peacefully handed over power in 2015 and remains a beacon of hope and unity,” Abubakar stated.
The group also called for an “aggressive and coordinated media campaign”—particularly in the North—to galvanise support for Jonathan’s candidacy and promote the party’s renewed agenda.
While commending the efforts of PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, the group expressed concern over internal sabotage, accusing some National Working Committee (NWC) members of “double loyalty” and “collaborating with the APC-led government.”
They urged Damagum to take disciplinary action against such figures to protect the party’s integrity ahead of 2027.
In response to debates around Jonathan’s constitutional eligibility to re-contest, the group maintained that the issue had “long been settled”and was being used by political opponents to sow division.
“Our loyalty is to the PDP, not individuals. But Jonathan represents our best chance to win and unite Nigeria,” the communiqué added.
Jonathan’s possible 2027 bid has been a subject of controversy, with factions within the party reportedly split between support for the former president and calls for new contenders, especially from other geopolitical zones.

Despite this, the Northern coalition insists the PDP remains popular at the grassroots in the region and expressed confidence that with unity and strategy, the party could “reclaim power from the APC in 2027.”
