Enugu East Endorses Peter Mbah for 2027 Re-election

Enugu East leaders back Governor Peter Mbah for 2027 re-election, praising his achievements in security, education, and infrastructure

A town hall meeting meant to review the two-year performance of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State on Thursday evolved into a powerful show of political unity and early endorsement for his 2027 re-election bid.

Held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, the event drew a diverse mix of political stakeholders, traditional rulers, professionals, youth and women’s groups, and former political rivals — all singing from the same hymn sheet: Peter Mbah deserves a second term.

Initially billed as an appraisal forum, the gathering quickly took on the tone of a campaign launch.

Speaker after speaker highlighted Mbah’s achievements across security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic revival, calling on the people of Enugu East to lead the charge for his re-election in 2027.

What stood out most was the collapse of party lines and political rivalry.

Even opposition voices rallied behind the governor, citing his performance as the unifying factor.

Perhaps the most dramatic moment came from Chijioke Edeoga, the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate, who had fiercely contested against Mbah. Edeoga stunned the audience by publicly endorsing his former opponent and calling for him to be adopted as the sole candidate for 2027.

“Like Saul who became Paul, I have seen the light. I pledge to support Peter Mbah’s return with everything I have,” Edeoga said, drawing rapturous applause.

His motion for sole candidacy was seconded by Ben Nwoye, former APC chairman in Enugu, who also invited Mbah to consider joining the APC — further underscoring the non-partisan nature of the endorsements.

From former Deputy Governor Chief Sunday Onyebuchi to PDP Zonal Chairman Nnamdi Nwafor, speaker after speaker praised Mbah’s leadership, often blending metrics of performance with cultural pride in Nkanu identity.

Key points from the endorsements included:

  1.  Security: Establishment of AI-powered security centres and a rapid response squad, making Enugu one of Nigeria’s safest states.
  2.  Education: Allocation of 33% of the state budget; construction of 260 Smart Green Schools; upgrade of technical institutions.
  3.  Infrastructure: Nearly 1,000km of roads constructed or ongoing; launch of CNG buses and modern transport terminals.
  4.  Healthcare: 260 new PHCs being built; major improvements at the State University Teaching Hospital.
  5.  Economic Revitalisation: Resuscitation of Nigergas and other state-owned enterprises; tourism and agriculture initiatives including farm estates and tractor plants.

The meeting ended with a communiqué declaring that Governor Mbah had not only fulfilled but surpassed his campaign promises, urging other zones in the state to support his second term as a matter of fairness and continuity.

Underlying the endorsements was the politics of zoning. Speakers noted that while Enugu West and North had produced two-term governors in the past (Chime and Ugwuanyi), Enugu East was now due the same, with Mbah as the beneficiary.

“Denying Mbah a second term would break an honourable tradition of zoning that has preserved equity and peace in Enugu State,” said Cornelius Nnaji, a former federal lawmaker.

Enugu’s political history shows that early endorsements don’t guarantee electoral outcomes.

Former governors like Chimaroke Nnamani, Sullivan Chime, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi all secured re-elections — but not without midterm opposition and shifting public sentiment.

For Mbah, this early wave of support gives him a strong head start. However, factors such as economic conditions, political realignments, and public perception will ultimately shape the outcome in 2027.

What began as a performance review turned into a rare display of political consensus.

Whether through Onyebuchi’s proverb, Edeoga’s biblical imagery, or ALGON’s developmental testimony, the underlying theme was clear: Governor Peter Mbah has governed well and deserves to continue.

In Enugu East, at least, the message is now official — *In Peter Mbah, we stand.
