IPOB hails Peter Obi’s call for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, describing it as timely and courageous, urging others to stand for justice and moral clarity in Nigeria
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has praised former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi for publicly calling for the release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The group described Obi’s position as both timely and courageous, especially in a political atmosphere that has seen many remain silent on Kanu’s prolonged detention.
IPOB said Obi’s statement reflected integrity, empathy and a rare moral clarity that is lacking among many politicians, particularly from the South-East.
IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, in a statement issued to journalists, commended Obi for rising above past criticisms levelled at him by Kanu and for attending the funeral of Kanu’s parents, which the group described as a show of empathy and maturity.
“Former Governor Peter Obi has recognised correctly that Nigeria has nothing to gain and everything to lose by continuing this illegal detention,” Powerful said.
He noted that Obi’s call for a political and legal resolution aligns with global best practices and represents a step toward restoring Nigeria’s reputation and moral compass.
IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, urging Justice James Omotosho to decide Kanu’s case based purely on legal merit.
The group also appealed to individuals of good conscience, both within and outside Nigeria, to back the call for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release.
Powerful accused some actors of fuelling the continued persecution of Kanu due to ethnic bias or foreign influence, warning that justice would eventually prevail.
“Let it be known that Mr Peter Obi has, by his statement, shown that common sense, integrity, and moral clarity still exist in Nigeria’s suffocating political space.
It is now up to others, especially those from the South-East, to find the courage to do what is right, not what is convenient,” Powerful added.

The statement has reignited public discourse over the legality and fairness of Kanu’s detention, a matter that remains a lightning rod in Nigeria’s human rights debate.
