Speaking during a media parley in Umuahia on Thursday night, Governor Otti confirmed that the region’s political leaders are engaging relevant federal authorities to secure Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release, although not all efforts are being publicised.
“Some of the engagements and assurances we have received are not for public consumption since it may derail the process,” Otti stated.
“But you can take it for granted that, as his Governor, I’m at the forefront of ensuring he comes back home. All the South East governors are together in this.”
His remarks followed a protest by Igbo elders at Government House, Umuahia, on Wednesday, where they accused regional leaders of neglecting Kanu.
The elders urged Otti to rally his counterparts and appeal directly to President Bola Tinubu.
The Alex Otti Nnamdi Kanu clarification appears aimed at restoring confidence in the leadership of the South East, which has faced criticism over perceived silence on the matter. Otti expressed hope that ongoing efforts would eventually yield positive results.
Turning to security concerns within Abia State, Governor Otti addressed the communal clashes in Arochukwu LGA involving the Itu community and neighbouring Cross River groups.
He attributed the violence to unconfirmed reports of natural resources — notably limestone — in the disputed area.
He explained that Abia’s Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, has been spearheading conflict resolution talks in Abuja with counterparts from Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
“So please reassure the displaced people that they are not abandoned and that very soon they will return to their ancestral homes,” he said.
Governor Otti also took a moment to respond to political criticisms, noting that while his administration remains open to constructive criticism, it will not yield to blackmail or political mischief.
“There’s a difference between holding government accountable and distorting facts for political gain,” Otti said.
“We remain focused on our mandate to rebuild Abia and restore integrity in governance.”
