China Nigeria strategic partnership strengthens economic and cultural ties

China Nigeria strategic partnership grows stronger with booming trade and cultural exchanges, boosting economic cooperation and shared development

China Nigeria strategic partnership continues to deepen as both countries celebrated significant milestones, marking 76 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China and 56 years of diplomatic relations with Nigeria.

During the reception in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, Consul General of China, and Hon.

Jaafaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on China-Nigeria Parliamentary Relations, reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to build a brighter future through shared history, cultural exchanges, and economic cooperation.

Hon. Yakubu praised the robust partnership, highlighting the tangible benefits in infrastructure, trade, technology, education, and culture.

He emphasised Nigeria’s dedication to remaining a reliable partner to China, aiming to contribute jointly to African development, global peace, and prosperity.

“This year’s celebration is particularly special as it coincides with Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary and China’s 76th National Day,” Yakubu noted.

“These milestones remind us of our shared struggles for sovereignty and dignity and the enduring friendship between our peoples.”

Yakubu also expressed strong support for China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI), calling for a fairer international order and promising the National Assembly’s readiness to leverage opportunities from this initiative for the benefit of Nigerian citizens.

Ms. Yan Yuqing highlighted the impressive growth in bilateral trade, which reached $21.89 billion in 2024, placing Nigeria as China’s second-largest trading partner in Africa.

She also noted the increasing interest among Nigerian youths in learning Chinese language and culture, underscoring the importance of people-to-people connections.

Affirming China’s commitment to sincere and fruitful relations with Africa, Ms. Yuqing said, “Our comprehensive partnership has yielded significant results, and under the Belt and Road Initiative, cooperation continues to flourish.”
