British Delegation Explores Akwa Ibom Investment Potential

British delegation Akwa Ibom investment tour reveals UK interest in agriculture, tourism, and trade as Governor Eno showcases key infrastructure projects

British delegation Akwa Ibom investment discussions took center stage on Thursday as a team from the British High Commission in Lagos visited Uyo to explore economic collaboration opportunities with the state government.

The delegation, led by Deputy High Commissioner Johnny Baxter, was welcomed by Governor Umo Eno, who outlined Akwa Ibom’s investment climate and ongoing development efforts under his ARISE Agenda.

Governor Eno emphasized the state’s drive to diversify beyond oil by promoting industrialization, tourism, and infrastructure-led growth.

He cited landmark projects such as the Ibom Industrial City, the Liberty Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone, and the Itam Industrial Park, where the government is seeking private partners to provide off-grid power solutions.

“We want to work with investors to power our parks and run them independently for optimal industrial operations,” Eno said.

The British delegation Akwa Ibom investment visit comes as the UK intensifies its post-Brexit strategy to deepen economic ties with Nigeria, one of its largest African trading partners.

The focus, officials say, is now shifting toward partnerships with sub-national governments.

Baxter commended Akwa Ibom’s infrastructure, green environment, and investment focus, saying:

“In less than 24 hours, I’ve been impressed by the scenery, roads, and structure of this state.

You can clearly see the agricultural potential. And I must say—Ibom Air is one of the best carriers in Nigeria.”

He added that the UK is particularly interested in partnerships in agriculture and tourism, sectors the state is keen to scale through strategic foreign investment.

Governor Eno also revealed that Akwa Ibom had recently sponsored underprivileged students for educational exposure in the UK, as part of efforts to inspire youth and strengthen human capital development.

He further applauded the work of the Tony Blair Institute, which is assisting the state in developing its tourism sector and governance reforms.

The delegation later toured flagship infrastructure, including the ARISE Resort, a multi-billion-naira transformation of a 70-hectare erosion site into a tourism asset.

Other delegates included Mark Smithson, UK Department for Business and Trade Country Director; Dr. Fortune Alfred, Senior Political Adviser; and Wale Adebajo, Senior Political Adviser at the British Deputy High Commission, Lagos.

The British delegation Akwa Ibom investment visit is widely seen as a nod to the state’s rising profile as a commercial hub in Nigeria’s Gulf of Guinea region.

Projects like Ibom Air, Ibom Deep Seaport, and the Aviation Hub are part of Akwa Ibom’s ambition to become a trade and transport gateway for West Africa.

The ARISE Agenda, Governor Eno’s blueprint for economic transformation, continues to push boundaries in job creation, industrialization, and infrastructure expansion.

As sub-national states in Nigeria become more assertive in attracting foreign partnerships, experts say visits like this one may mark the beginning of a new wave of decentralised trade diplomacy.
