The decision was reached at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Tuesday at the Yenagoa residence of the State Chairman of the PDP, Alabh Turnah, and presided over by the Bayelsa East Senatorial District Vice Chairman, Andy Majors.
Speaking after the meeting, Majors said the resolution was aimed at strengthening unity, inclusion and equitable political representation across the senatorial district.
He explained that the zoning arrangement reflects a long-standing rotational tradition that has guided senatorial representation in Bayelsa East since 1999.
According to him, the new agreement ensures that all constituencies will have had a fair opportunity to produce a senator under the PDP platform by 2031.
Majors noted that the arrangement is designed to promote peace and political balance within the district while preventing internal disputes over the senatorial ticket.
He added that from 2035, the party would move away from zoning and adopt a merit-based system focused on competence, performance and leadership capacity.
“The decision signals the beginning of a new political era anchored on merit, practical development, and quality representation,” he said.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to party unity and pledged continued support for the leadership of the PDP in Bayelsa State.
