Ajose announced his decision on Tuesday while addressing supporters in Lagos, saying the move followed careful reflection and a desire to promote unity within the party.
He said although the decision was difficult, he found peace in prioritising collective progress over personal ambition.
“I know it is a very tough decision. I still struggled with it overnight, too. But when I woke up in the morning, I had my peace,” he said.
Ajose added that his focus remained on ensuring inclusiveness in governance and delivering benefits to all groups within the political structure.
“Everything that everybody will benefit from, even if I won’t be the governor, you are still going to benefit,” he stated.
Announcing his withdrawal formally, he pledged to work within the campaign structure of the deputy governor moving forward.
“In the interest of the party, I have decided that I will let go. I will support Dr. Hamzat,” he said.
Ajose’s exit from the race follows similar political realignments within the Lagos APC, including the withdrawal of former governorship candidate Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, who also endorsed Hamzat.
Jandor had earlier stepped down after citing party consensus and support for the deputy governor’s candidacy as key reasons for his decision.
