Police in Bauchi State recovered 387 blocks of suspected cannabis sativa from one of the crashed vehicles, raising fresh concerns about drug trafficking routes through the state.

According to Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu, the discovery was made on 4 October 2025, after a head-on collision between two Toyota Corolla vehicles in Wom Village.

The crash, reportedly caused by reckless overtaking, involved a vehicle carrying the District Head of Nabardo, Suleiman Bala Suleiman, along with his family members.

“All the occupants sustained injuries and were rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital,” said Aliyu, adding that the District Head suffered a fractured leg and remains in hospital.

However, the more startling revelation came during a search of the second vehicle, identified as a white Toyota Corolla with Abuja registration (GWA-155GW).

Officers uncovered 387 blocks of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, alongside personal belongings, a black Tecno phone without a SIM card, and vehicle documents.

Police have launched a manhunt for the driver of the second vehicle, who fled the scene immediately after the accident.

The exhibits are now with the State Investigation Department pending forensic analysis, after which the case will be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The Bauchi cannabis seizure further highlights the region’s role as a major smuggling corridor, with frequent drug interceptions recorded between Jos, Bauchi and Gombe.

NDLEA reports from 2024 show over 2,000kg of cannabis seized in Bauchi alone, with 145 arrests made.

Law enforcement notes that traffickers are increasingly using private vehicles and remote rural roads to evade detection.

The police have called on members of the public to come forward with any information that could help track down the suspect.

Commissioner Aliyu stressed that the Bauchi Police Command remains committed to dismantling drug trafficking networks and ensuring justice for both victims of road accidents and broader society affected by drug-related crimes.
