APC Enugu Defection Bolsters Party’s Power

APC Enugu Defection strengthens the ruling party as five lawmakers join its ranks, giving APC full control of Enugu’s federal constituencies

APC Enugu Defection has reshaped the political landscape in Nigeria’s lower legislative chamber, as five lawmakers from Enugu State formally crossed over to the All Progressives Congress on Thursday.

Their defection, alongside that of Daniel Asama from the Labour Party representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, further consolidates the APC’s dominance in the House of Representatives. The ruling party now commands a solid 243-member majority — more than two-thirds of the Green Chamber.

The once-strong Peoples Democratic Party now trails with 72 members, while Labour’s numbers have dwindled to 21.

The New Nigeria People’s Party holds 15, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance retains five. The Social Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, and Young Progressives Party collectively contribute just four seats.

This political realignment effectively places all eight Enugu federal constituencies under the APC’s banner — a stunning turnaround from the 2023 elections, when the Labour Party secured seven of those seats and the PDP one.

Speaking after the defection ceremony witnessed by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and APC National Chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, Nkanu East/Nkanu West representative Nnaji said the move was driven by “conviction and purpose.”

He added that joining the APC was “a bold step into the future,” aligning with Governor Mbah’s developmental agenda.

“We refuse to remain spectators when we can be key players in Nigeria’s progress,” he declared, describing the shift as a decision rooted in courage and strategic foresight.

Nnaji praised Mbah’s “transformational leadership,” citing achievements in education, aviation, and information technology, as well as growing investor confidence in the state. “Through Governor Mbah, Enugu State has become the reference point for good leadership,” he said.

He concluded that the APC Enugu Defection marked “a new dawn of hope, inclusion, and prosperity,” uniting the state with the heartbeat of national progress.
