Amupitan Faces Key Tasks as New INEC Chairman

Prof. Joash Amupitan assumes leadership of INEC, tasked with electoral reforms, restoring public trust, and ensuring credible elections ahead of 2027

Prof. Joash Amupitan has assumed office as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), inheriting the critical task of restoring public confidence, deepening reforms, and safeguarding the independence of Nigeria’s electoral body.

The appointment comes at a time when Nigeria’s electoral landscape faces scrutiny.

The 2023 general elections, while lauded by some as an improvement, left lingering concerns over technology, logistics, and result transparency.

Two years ahead of the 2027 general elections, expectations from Amupitan are high.

Observers note that the immediate past INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, left a complex legacy, earning both praise and criticism.

Amupitan’s challenge, therefore, extends beyond managing elections; it involves convincing Nigerians that the process is credible, transparent, and impartial.

A key focus for the new Chairman will be public trust.

Many Nigerians continue to question the credibility of results, particularly regarding the role of the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

While the portal collects results from all polling units, it does not replace the official collation process.

Amupitan must clarify this distinction and strengthen the Commission’s communication strategy through press briefings, town halls, and digital platforms.

Electoral reforms remain a priority.

Technological innovations, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and IReV, have improved the electoral process, but vulnerabilities persist.

Amupitan is expected to address system disruptions, data security, and network challenges before the 2027 elections.

He must also work with the National Assembly to clarify ambiguous sections of the Electoral Act and safeguard INEC’s independence against political interference.

Institutional integrity will be another focus area.

Ensuring neutrality among Resident Electoral Commissioners, administrative staff, and field officials is essential.

The Commission must develop transparent recruitment and evaluation systems while enforcing internal discipline publicly and consistently.

Logistics and technology coordination remain critical to electoral success.

Amupitan will need to audit BVAS devices, servers, and data storage systems, as well as improve election-day delivery of materials.

Polling units should be placed in neutral public locations, such as schools, and partnerships with logistics and security agencies must be strengthened.

Electoral offences also demand attention.

Ballot snatching, vote buying, and result manipulation undermine democratic credibility.

Amupitan is expected to advocate for the establishment of the Electoral Offences Commission and work closely with law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies to ensure accountability.

Voter education and participation will be central to Amupitan’s agenda.

With voter turnout dropping below 30 per cent in recent elections, INEC must engage communities, first-time voters, and marginalized groups through targeted campaigns in indigenous languages and digital media.

Continuous Voter Registration must also be made more accessible.

Finally, Amupitan must navigate political pressures with integrity.

His leadership will be tested as he balances law, ethics, and administrative efficiency, ensuring INEC remains impartial.

Upcoming local and governorship elections, as well as the 2027 general election, will serve as key benchmarks for his tenure.

With courage, vision, and consistent reform, analysts suggest that Amupitan has the potential to restore faith in Nigeria’s electoral process and strengthen the foundations of the nation’s democracy.
