Senate President Godswill Akpabio mocks PDP and Labour Party during plenary as senators, including Tambuwal, defect to ADC amid internal crises
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has drawn attention on social media after mocking the state of Nigeria’s opposition parties during a plenary session.
Akpabio’s remarks came as he read an official defection letter from former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, confirming his move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The letter also noted several resignations from the Labour Party (LP) and other minority caucus members.

During the reading, Akpabio paused and remarked, visibly amused by the opposition’s struggles:
“Oh, PDP is gone! Even the Labour Party is dead. I’ve read about three different political parties now.”
He dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was behind the opposition’s internal turmoil, attributing the disarray to leadership failures within the parties themselves:
“You cannot accuse the ruling party of tampering with their leadership because here you have APGA, you have Labour, you have MVP, and all those things. They’ve not been able to put their parties together. So, APC cannot be blamed for this.”

Akpabio concluded that the opposition parties are struggling to maintain minority status in the Senate, and he expressed satisfaction at their inability to consolidate effectively.
