Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu urges Agege council chairman AbdulGaniyu Obasa to promote community development, reconciliation, and accountable governance
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called on the newly confirmed Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, AbdulGaniyu Obasa, to prioritise community development and unify the council for effective governance.

The governor made the remarks during the swearing-in ceremony of AbdulGaniyu at Lagos House, Ikeja, on Monday.
Obasa, son of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudasiru Obasa, had been acting as council chairman following the resignation of Tunde Azeez on health grounds. His confirmation by the Agege Legislative Assembly occurred in November.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of local government as the level of governance closest to citizens, where policies intersect with daily life, and urged the chairman to lead inclusively and transparently.
“Your task is to deepen community development to promote social cohesion and to ensure that the standard of governance is delivered fairly, transparently, and equitably to the people of Agege,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“You need to work with your legislature and your traditional institutions, uphold accountability, and ensure the proper management of public resources.”
Acknowledging Obasa’s performance while acting as chairman, the governor encouraged him to bridge gaps between policy and community needs and reconcile stakeholders.
“I know that in your acting capacity, you started very well and have done a lot of great things.
But now, as chairman, you have the full mandate to reconcile everyone,” Sanwo-Olu said, noting that Agege remains divided following July local government elections, where some party members alleged candidate imposition during primaries.
The governor added, “If I look at you and tell you that Agege is fully reconciled, I’ll be lying.
But you have the responsibility as chairman to do that. It is not a function of age; it is a function of the office you hold and the responsibility given to you.”
