ADC Warns Against Division Ahead of June Primaries

ADC warns division and exceptionality among supporters ahead of June primaries, stressing unity is essential for electoral success

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned supporters of its presidential aspirants against fostering division and “exceptionality” ahead of the party’s June primaries.

The warning was issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, during a live audio conversation on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

Abdullahi emphasised that while proposals to hold the 2027 general elections early, in 2026, could offer strategic advantages for the party, it could also present challenges by reopening internal divisions.

He highlighted that Nigerians are “tired of the present administration,” positioning the ADC as a potential beneficiary of voter dissatisfaction.

The spokesman revealed that he had met with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former governors Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai to discuss party unity ahead of the general elections.

“Our leaders are aware of the task ahead, and every one of them is committed to ensuring that we win this election together resolutely,” Abdullahi said.

Addressing the divisive tactics of some supporters, Abdullahi warned, “Saying it is either this candidate or nothing is not helpful; winning the election matters, and divisiveness cannot deliver victory for the party.

We believe all aspirants are qualified; vilifying anyone or any region is unhelpful and complicates efforts to strengthen unity within the party ahead of elections.”

He specifically noted that supporters chanting “Peter Obi or nothing” were undermining both the candidate and the party’s national outreach.

Abdullahi emphasised that ADC would focus on consolidating its efforts to achieve credible, peaceful, and inclusive victories nationwide.

The spokesman also said the party was treating the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory area council elections seriously, seeking to improve on its performance in the recent Anambra off-season poll.
