ADC chieftain denies Atiku controls party, insists transparency

ADC chieftain Chille Igbawua has dismissed claims that the party is being used by Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chille Igbawua, has dismissed claims that the party is being positioned as a political vehicle for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Chille Igbawua made the clarification on Monday during a live interview on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’, where he addressed recent political alignments and speculations within opposition parties.

His comments come amid heightened political activity following the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and his New Nigerian Peoples Party counterpart, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

Reacting to growing public perception about internal arrangements within the ADC, Chille Igbawua insisted that the party remains open and committed to a transparent selection process.

He stated that decisions within the party would not be predetermined or influenced by any individual’s political ambition.

“I am sufficiently an insider enough to know if discussions were held, who was deciding who was going to emerge. And I’ve said that this certainty about who will emerge is that it will be through a transparent and open process,” he said.

Chille Igbawua further rejected suggestions that the ADC serves as a special-purpose platform for Atiku Abubakar, describing the claim as false.

“We have sufficiently over time denied this issue that the ADC is a special-purpose vehicle for Atiku Abubakar. That certainly is untrue. Nobody who has come into ADC has been given preference over him,” he added.
