Senate confirms Ayo Omidiran as Federal Character Commission chairman alongside 37 nominees to enhance equitable federal representation
The Nigerian Senate on Thursday confirmed President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Mrs Ayo Omidiran as the new Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), marking a key leadership reshuffle in the agency responsible for ensuring equitable representation in federal institutions.

Omidiran, a former lawmaker from Osun State, was approved alongside Peter Eze of Enugu State and 36 other nominees as Federal Commissioners.
The confirmations followed a screening report presented by the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs during a plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Presenting the report, committee chairman Senator Allwell Onyesoh (PDP, Rivers East) stated that all nominees appeared before the panel and demonstrated the competence and qualifications required for their roles.
“The committee did not receive any criminal complaints against any of the nominees. They submitted all required documents and demonstrated capacity for the roles they were nominated for,” Onyesoh said.
The vetting process included a review of curriculum vitae, Code of Conduct clearance certificates, police and DSS reports, and individual presentations with rigorous questioning.
All nominees, representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, met constitutional requirements and were described as “eminently qualified.”
Eze distinguished himself during the screening, demonstrating a deep understanding of the FCC’s mandate and potential reforms.
Onyesoh said his appointment would bolster the commission’s capacity to review outdated statutes and align them with current realities.
The Senate adopted the committee’s report following a state-by-state review and a voice vote in plenary, receiving unanimous approval.
Peter Eze, an economist and public administrator from Aji in Enugu State, currently serves as Executive Assistant to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
He holds a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a Master’s in Customs Management from the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), Beijing.

The remaining 36 nominees confirmed include representatives from all states and the FCT, such as Lawal Ya’u Roni (Jigawa), Abubakar Bunu (Kebbi), Eludayo Eluyemi (Osun), Abdulwasiu Bawalla (Lagos), Obinna Oriaku (Abia), Dora Ebong (Akwa Ibom), Victor Edoror (Edo), Jerry Alagbaoso (Imo), Aminu Tambar (Sokoto), and Solomon Ayuba Dagami (FCT).
