PDP confirms plans for inclusive national convention

PDP confirms November 15–16 national convention, says Nigerians are eager to see the party united and ready to sustain democracy.

PDP national convention preparations are well underway, with the Peoples Democratic Party confirming that Nigerians are watching keenly as the party works to strengthen its internal structures ahead of the key event.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who also serves as Secretary of the National Convention Publicity Sub-committee, said the growing interest in the upcoming convention reflects the public’s trust in the PDP as a stabilising force in Nigeria’s democracy.

“Nigerians are eager to know what the PDP is doing to put itself together as a party,” Ologunagba stated. “They see the PDP’s vibrancy as essential to the sustenance of democracy.”

The national elective convention is scheduled to take place from November 15 to 16, and the party has already activated 15 broad-based sub-committees to ensure an inclusive, transparent, and credible process.

According to Ologunagba, the enthusiasm from Nigerians is rooted in nostalgia for the party’s performance during its 16-year rule, which he described as a “glorious era” marked by sound economic management and international investor confidence.

“Under PDP governance, Nigeria paid off its debts, experienced double-digit GDP growth, and became the number one destination for foreign investment in Africa,” he said.

He added that by 2015, Nigeria’s economy was valued at over $600 billion, citing this as proof of the party’s track record.

When asked about speculation regarding a possible defection of a PDP governor to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ologunagba dismissed the rumour, saying, “The PDP is more than any individual. Such a move cannot derail our convention.”

He also clarified that the recent state congress in Edo was valid and conducted by a properly constituted committee. An appeal panel has since been set up to address any grievances arising from the process.

Ologunagba hinted that some purported parallel activities may be nothing more than political theatrics meant to distract or legitimise illegal actions.
