PDP Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket to South, Bold Move Signals New Strategy

PDP zones 2027 presidential ticket to South, confirms Damagum as chairman, aiming for internal unity and positioning for 2027 election

PDP zones 2027 presidential ticket to South — a decisive step taken at the 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, marking a strategic shift to uplift the party’s unity and electability ahead of the 2027 general election.

The resolution places southern aspirants, including Governor Seyi Makinde, at the forefront of the contest.

The NEC also maintained the existing zoning of party offices—northern positions remain in the North while southern roles stay in the South—and confirmed Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum as substantive National Chairman until the November convention in Ibadan.

The resolution responds to internal pressures, including the “G5” debate and unresolved tensions from the 2023 primaries.

By aligning with the principle of rotational equity, the move seeks to restore trust, especially among the party’s southern stakeholders, and correct past missteps.

Governor Douye Diri, who chaired the zoning committee, revealed that internal consultations were extensive and aimed at reinforcing cohesion and inclusivity.

The NEC didn’t stop at zoning. It also condemned the ruling party’s alleged authoritarian conduct during recent by-elections, accusing the APC of intimidation, coercion, and excessive militarisation.

The PDP reaffirmed its commitment to democracy and pledged to reclaim political power and relevance by 2027.

Bala Ibrahim, spokesperson for the APC, dismissed the zoning as inconsequential, branding PDP’s efforts as doomed regardless of candidate or region.

Tanko Yunusa, coordinator of the Obidient Movement, said Peter Obi, notable southern figure and former LP candidate, needs time before making his political move and may or may not rejoin PDP.

NEC also buffed preparations for the upcoming National Convention, slated for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan.

Delegates have been urged to micro-zone positions within geographic zones quickly—establishing a fresh blueprint to deliver balance and readiness for 2027.
