Jonathan Not Power-Hungry, Ex-Aide Imagwe Defends Him

Jude Imagwe says former President Goodluck Jonathan is not interested in power, dismissing claims linking him to the PDP 2027 presidential race

Former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Jude Imagwe, has defended his former principal, insisting that he is neither “power-hungry nor power-drunk” amid renewed speculation about a possible return to the presidency.

Imagwe made the remarks during an interview on News Central Television, where he responded to claims linking Jonathan to a presidential ticket reportedly being floated by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The comments follow reports that the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the PDP had declared Jonathan as its presidential candidate ahead of the next general elections, a development that has sparked political debate.

However, Imagwe maintained that there is no indication that the former president has accepted, completed, or submitted any nomination forms relating to a 2027 presidential bid.

He argued that Jonathan’s past actions demonstrate a leader who is not driven by desperation for political power, referencing his decision to concede defeat in the 2015 election.

Imagwe said Jonathan had long demonstrated humility, discipline and sacrifice throughout his political journey, adding that he does not believe the former president is eager to return to Aso Rock.

He also criticised individuals he accused of dragging Jonathan’s name into political conversations ahead of the 2027 elections without his consent or confirmation.

According to him, there is no documentary or pictorial evidence suggesting that Jonathan has undertaken any formal steps toward a new presidential bid.

Imagwe further stressed that any legitimate nomination process requires the candidate’s direct involvement and signature, which he said has not occurred in this case.

The former aide’s comments add to ongoing speculation around Jonathan’s political future, as various factions within the PDP continue to position potential candidates ahead of the next election cycle.

As of the time of filing this report, Jonathan has not publicly declared any intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
