Zamfara APC Targets 400,000 New Members Following Governor Lawal’s Defection

Zamfara APC targets 400,000 new members in e-registration drive after Governor Dauda Lawal joins ruling party ahead of 2027 elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State is aiming to register 400,000 additional members in its ongoing e-membership exercise following the defection of Governor Dauda Lawal from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Secretary to the Zamfara Government (SSG), Malam Abubakar Nakwada, made the announcement on Tuesday, urging residents to actively participate in the registration initiative.

The move, he said, is expected to bolster the party’s prospects in the 2027 general elections.

“The APC targets 400,000 additional progressive members from Zamfara in the next 17 days,” Nakwada stated in a release issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Sulaiman Tudu.

Governor Lawal formally joined the APC on Monday after a stakeholders’ consultation chaired by the state deputy governor, Malam Mani Mummuni.

According to Nakwada, the decision was influenced by the PDP’s deepening internal crisis and the need for unity in advancing state development.

“The governor’s decision to join the APC was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting. Earlier, a state-wide engagement led by elder statesman Alhaji Salihu Mai Buhu-Gummi provided guidance on the state’s political future amidst PDP’s turmoil and INEC’s timelines for the 2027 elections,” Nakwada explained.

He added that stakeholders largely recommended the defection to foster consensus among the state’s political elite and address security challenges.

All members of the state executive and political appointees have expressed full support for Governor Lawal’s move.

“The APC membership e-registration will reopen tomorrow. I, therefore, urge residents of the state to come out en masse to register and surpass the 400,000 target,” Nakwada concluded.
