Trump’s National Security Strategy Sparks Global Concerns

Trump’s national security strategy emphasises economics, migration, and Western civilisation, raising concerns among allies and observers globally

The White House has released the Trump national security strategy, a document outlining US foreign policy priorities, drawing attention for its unusual focus on President Donald Trump’s personal achievements and worldview.

Analysts say the document departs sharply from conventional US security strategies, emphasising economic interests, migration, and Western civilisation over traditional geopolitical threats.

The strategy highlights three key themes.

First, it rejects the notion that Trump is isolationist, noting his administration’s involvement in eight peace deals and actions against Iran’s nuclear programme.

The document portrays US responsibility for global peace but prioritises the western hemisphere, identifying drug cartels and irregular migration as the primary regional threats.

Second, the document underscores a civilisational lens, asserting that “Western civilisation” faces threats from migration, liberal governments, and cultural decline.

It criticises European nations for policies perceived as undermining traditional Western values, warning that continued migration could transform the continent within two decades.

Observers have linked this rhetoric to the so-called “great replacement theory,” though the White House has dismissed such claims.

The third prominent theme is an economic approach to foreign policy. Detailed sections focus on reshoring industries, restructuring the global trade system, and countering China’s economic rise.

Security issues, such as Russia’s ambitions in Europe or Taiwan’s democratic sovereignty, receive minimal attention, with arguments framed in terms of economic and strategic utility rather than principles or values.

Experts caution that the Trump national security strategy signals a transactional foreign policy, in which economic gain takes precedence over traditional alliances and democratic principles.
