2027: Tonye Cole Says Parties Naturally Seek to Weaken Opposition

Tonye Cole opposition democracy APC rivalry discussed as former APC candidate says weakening opposition is normal in politics worldwide

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, has said that political parties naturally attempt to weaken the opposition, describing the practice as a normal feature of democratic competition.

Tonye Cole addressed concerns over political dynamics involving the ruling APC and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He noted that such strategies are not unique to Nigeria, stressing that similar patterns exist in democracies around the world where ruling parties often seek to maintain political advantage.

“Every party, regardless of being APC or not, will always push to weaken the opposition. It is the opposition’s response to that push that makes democracy work. This happens all over the world,” Cole said.

He explained that the presence of a strong opposition is essential to democratic legitimacy, adding that efforts by opposition groups to unite could ultimately strengthen political competition in the country.

According to him, the ongoing realignments within opposition parties reflect a broader democratic process, even though they may be met with resistance from the ruling party.

Cole also emphasised that political rivalry, while often intense, can improve governance outcomes by forcing parties to become more strategic and self-critical.

“I’m one of those creatures that believe that competition actually makes you better. Competition makes you think smarter. It makes you look forward at your own weaknesses and your strength,” he added.
