APC Gains Thousands of ADC Defectors in Sokoto after supporters leave the opposition party in Goronyo, strengthening the ruling party’s base
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a major political boost in Sokoto State after thousands of supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) defected to the ruling party in Gorau Town, Goronyo Local Government Area.

The defection, which took place in Gorau/Takakume Ward, represents a significant setback for the ADC in Sokoto East Senatorial District because the area serves as the political base of Hon. Bashir Usman Gorau, the member representing Gada/Goronyo Federal Constituency and a prominent figure within the opposition party.
The new members were formally welcomed into the APC during a rally attended by party leaders, stakeholders and supporters.
APC officials described the development as a sign of growing confidence in the administration of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto and the party’s expanding influence across the state.
Receiving the defectors, Alhaji Muhammad Musa Sarkin Alaru, APC Zonal Vice Chairman for Sokoto East, assured the new members that they would enjoy equal opportunities within the party.
Alhaji Sarkin Alaru said the APC remained committed to inclusive leadership and encouraged the defectors to actively participate in the party’s activities at the grassroots level.
He also praised Alhaji Hussaini N. Umar Gorau, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, for his mobilisation efforts, which he said contributed to the growing strength of the APC in the area.
Speaking at the rally, Hussaini Gorau linked the increasing number of defections across Sokoto State to what he described as the achievements of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto’s administration and the political leadership of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
He highlighted government efforts in road construction, rural development, agriculture, security improvement and the fight against banditry as key factors influencing public support for the APC.
The APC Chairman in Goronyo Local Government Area, Alhaji Sa’idu Muhammad Goronyo, urged the new members to remain united and committed to the party’s principles as the APC continues to strengthen its presence in the council area.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Nasiru Mukhtar Gorau said their decision to join the APC was based on what they described as visible development projects and improved services under the current administration.
Nasiru Mukhtar Gorau specifically mentioned infrastructure development, security initiatives and social amenities in rural communities as reasons behind their decision to leave the ADC.

Party defections remain a recurring feature of Nigerian politics, often reshaping local political dynamics and influencing electoral strategies.
The event also included recognition awards for individuals described as contributors to community development and party growth.
Recipients included Barrister Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Minister of State for Works; Alhaji Hussaini N. Umar Gorau, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor; and Alhaji Umar Ajiya, the APC Sokoto East Senatorial candidate.

The latest political movement is expected to intensify competition between the APC and opposition parties in Sokoto East, where local influence and grassroots support remain important factors in determining future electoral outcomes.
