Sunday Igboho Slams Sowore Over ‘Amala Politics’ Remark

Sunday Igboho Sowore clash deepens as Igboho rejects ‘amala politics’ remark and defends his activism and political choices

Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, has rejected criticism by human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, describing comments on his activism as misleading and inconsequential.

The reaction follows a viral video in which Sowore criticised what he termed “transactional politics” among some regional agitators, suggesting that their engagements were driven by personal or material interests.

In the video, Sowore appeared to reference Igboho’s recent political positions, including support for President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election bid, describing it as “amala politics.”

Responding in a statement issued on Tuesday in Ibadan by his media aide, Olayomi Koiki, Igboho dismissed the remarks and urged the public to disregard them.

He maintained that his activism is focused on addressing insecurity and protecting lives across the South-West region.

“We strongly reject the characterisation of Igboho’s activism as transactional. Such a myopic position misrepresents the intent and focus of our agitation,” the statement said.

Igboho argued that his support for political leaders and his advocacy for improved security fall within his constitutional rights and are guided by the collective interests of the Yoruba people.

He stressed that he cannot be compelled to align with any political platform or endorse specific candidates.

The statement also questioned Sowore’s role in past campaigns for Igboho’s freedom, alleging a contradiction between his public stance and personal conduct.

According to Koiki, Igboho’s movement is rooted in tackling pressing security challenges, including kidnappings, attacks on farmers, and threats to traditional institutions across Yorubaland.

He added that these concerns, rather than political ambition, drive the agitator’s actions.

The statement further contrasted Igboho’s approach with Sowore’s advocacy for nationwide revolution, describing the former’s strategy as a practical response to ongoing threats within local communities.

The exchange marks a growing tension within Nigeria’s activist and political space, as debates over strategy, loyalty, and leadership continue ahead of the 2027 elections.
