Senate Proposes Higher Federal Government Share of Federation Revenue

Senate moves to increase FG’s share of federation revenue to meet rising national responsibilities and improve infrastructure and security

The Nigerian Senate has begun moves to amend the 1999 Constitution to boost the Federal Government’s share of federation revenue, arguing that the current allocation formula does not reflect the growing responsibilities of the centre.

Currently, the federal government receives 52.68% of federation revenue, while the 36 states share 26.72%, and local governments receive 20.60%.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West), aims to increase the federal share to address financial pressures caused by infrastructure maintenance, internal security, and national obligations.

Karimi stated that funding constraints under the existing formula have affected federal road upkeep and efforts to combat banditry and terrorism.

“The current revenue sharing formula is outdated and unsustainable because it places excessive financial pressure on the federal government,” he said.
