Segun Sowunmi Says ADC Faces First Test in Osun, Ekiti

Segun Sowunmi says ADC’s credibility will be tested in Osun and Ekiti elections, urging focus on performance over public rhetoric

Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, has asserted that the upcoming governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states will serve as the first real test for the African Democratic Congress, emphasising that electoral performance, rather than public rhetoric, determines political credibility.

Sowunmi made the remarks on Thursday, amid growing discussions about opposition platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP leader dismissed claims that the ADC is emerging as a viable alternative for Nigerians, arguing that the party’s actual strength will be revealed through its performance in Osun and Ekiti.

“The first test they’re going to have will be in Osun and then Ekiti, whichever comes first. And then they’re going to learn that these things don’t yield to the noise that they are making,” he said.

Sowunmi cautioned against hasty evaluations of the party, noting that political organisations need time to address internal weaknesses and entrenched behaviours.

He stressed that changing political habits requires deliberate effort, self-awareness, and guidance.

“We are human beings; we are creatures of character and habits. The habits you pick over the years, if no one tells you they are bad, you will continue to use them,” he explained.

The PDP stalwart also flagged concerns about signs of entitlement among the ADC ranks, observing that some members expect party tickets even before active participation.

“You have not even gotten past the goal line. You already have very heavy conversations of entitlement from those who think they must be given tickets even before they join,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the Ekiti governorship election for June 20, 2026, and the Osun poll for August 8, 2026.

INEC outlined timelines for party primaries, candidate nominations, and campaigns, describing the elections as preparatory exercises for the 2027 general elections.

The electoral body also highlighted reforms to strengthen integrity, including assigning Resident Electoral Commissioners outside their states of origin and enhancing the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System.
