Rivers State Truce Hailed as Sign of Democratic Maturity Amidst Crisis

An APC chieftain lauded the Rivers State Truce between Wike and Fubara, mediated by President Tinubu, calling it a victory for democracy and unity

Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has extensively lauded the recent Rivers State Truce achieved between Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

This significant political development is seen as a crucial step towards resolving prolonged tensions within the state’s leadership, which had previously led to the declaration of a state of emergency.

Dr. Aikoriogbe, in a statement issued from Benin City, specifically commended Chief Wike for what he described as his bold and statesmanlike role in reconciling Governor Fubara.

He highlighted Wike’s pivotal involvement in de-escalating the political crisis that had gripped the state.

According to Dr. Aikoriogbe, the peaceful resolution of this long-running dispute represents a “win-win for both parties and a victory for the people of Rivers State.”

This perspective emphasises the benefits of dialogue and compromise over protracted conflict, suggesting that the primary beneficiaries are the citizens who can now expect more focused governance.

Aikoriogie further noted that the peaceful resolution of the dispute between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State marked a significant step toward democratic consolidation within Nigeria.

He views this as an indication that Nigeria’s democracy is indeed maturing, moving towards a system where internal conflicts are resolved through negotiation rather than confrontation.

This is particularly relevant given President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s earlier intervention, which included suspending the governor and the state assembly and installing a sole administrator to restore order amidst the crisis.

He also extended commendation to Honourable Martins Chike Amaewhule, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, for his cooperation in achieving the peaceful accord.

Amaewhule’s willingness to engage in the reconciliation process was deemed essential for the success of the truce, demonstrating the importance of legislative support in conflict resolution.

According to Dr. Aikoriogbe, “The unity of the legislative and executive arms will not only foster peace but ensure that governance returns to the front burner in Rivers State.”

This statement underscores the critical link between political stability and effective administration, suggesting that the truce will allow the state government to focus on delivering public services and development initiatives without unnecessary distractions.

He particularly highlighted the role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in brokering the peace deal.

Dr. Aikoriogbe asserted that President Tinubu’s “timely intervention and statesmanlike leadership in brokering the peace deal is a clear indication that Nigeria’s democracy is maturing under a president who values unity, dialogue, and institutional respect.”

This praise positions the President as a key facilitator of democratic progress, especially in light of the prior state of emergency and the ongoing efforts to fully reinstate democratic governance.

Dr. Aikoriogbe also used the opportunity to articulate a broader vision for leadership in Nigeria.

He stated, “Nigeria needs more leaders who understand that power is a tool for service, not personal vendetta.”

This powerful message advocates for a shift in political culture, prioritising public welfare and collective progress over individual grievances or ambitions, a principle evident in the Rivers State Truce.

He reiterated his point about the benefits of a harmonious relationship between the governmental branches: “The unity of the legislative and executive arms will not only foster peace but ensure that governance returns to the state.”

This repetition underscores the critical importance of a cohesive government for the well-being and development of Rivers State.

The successful mediation of the conflict is seen as a template for resolving similar political impasses across other states in Nigeria.

It demonstrates that with high-level intervention and a commitment from all parties involved, even deeply entrenched disputes can be resolved amicably, thereby strengthening democratic institutions.

The implications of this truce are far-reaching for Rivers State.

It is expected to create a more stable political environment, which can attract investment, facilitate developmental projects, and ultimately improve the living conditions of the citizens.

The resolution allows the state to channel its energies towards progress rather than internal strife.

The commendation from an APC chieftain for a resolution involving a state governor and an FCT Minister (both of whom have historical ties to different political factions) further signifies a broader political understanding and a focus on national stability.
