In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and shared on his official X handle, President Bola Tinubu extolled Senator Ibrahim as “a principled statesman, trusted ally, and courageous democrat.”

Recalling their bond that began in the Senate chambers during the aborted Third Republic in 1992, Tinubu wrote: “Abu has been more than a friend. He is my brother. Since we first met in the Senate chambers in 1992, our friendship has only grown deeper and stronger.”

The President commended the former lawmaker’s steadfast commitment to democracy, his resistance to military dictatorship, and his contributions to nation-building.

“When the authorities released him and left the rest of us in the cell, Abu refused to leave, insisting that all of us be released together,” Tinubu recalled, describing the act as a mark of rare courage and loyalty.

He praised Ibrahim’s role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013 and his enduring advocacy for peace and unity within the party.

“As a patriot, Abu has lived a life of dedication to public service and the pursuit of a greater Nigeria,” Tinubu said, adding that the senator’s support during his 2023 presidential campaign was invaluable.

In a separate message, President Bola Tinubu also extended warm birthday greetings to former First Lady, Chief Margaret Shonekan, who turned 84 on October 28, 2025.

He described her as “an embodiment of grace and compassion,” celebrating her enduring dignity and the inspiring legacy of her late husband, Chief Ernest Shonekan, who once served as Head of the Interim National Government and Chairman of the United African Company.

“The President celebrates Chief Margaret Shonekan, whose humility and kindness continue to inspire. Her contributions to society and quiet strength remain a guiding light,” the statement read.
