Peter Obi’s political party vision urges Nigerians to build democratic, law-abiding institutions stronger than government for a better future
Peter Obi’s political party vision took center stage during a public book presentation in Abuja, where the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate emphasized the need to build enduring, democratic political institutions that are bigger than individuals and government.

Speaking at the launch of two books The Bubbles of Nigeria’s Democracy and Wadata Wonders by veteran journalist Ike Abonyi Obi called on Nigerians, especially journalists, to contribute to national growth by writing about Nigeria’s complex political realities.
“We are working hard to build that new Nigeria where we are going to have political parties that will outlive us,” Obi said.
“Parties that are organised, law-abiding, and bigger than the government itself.”
He lamented how individuals in power have weakened political institutions, adding, “Those of us opportune to be in government have helped to ruin the parties.”
The Peter Obi political party vision resonated with fellow political leader and former PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, who agreed that Nigeria’s democracy was broken.
We are working hard to build that new Nigeria where we are going to have political parties that will outlive us.
“We need parties where people stay 30, 40, 50 years and build,” Secondus stated.
“Today, it’s all about personal interest, not institutions.”
Martins Oloja, former Managing Director of The Guardian, who reviewed the books, urged journalists to promote alternative views and democratic discourse.
“Alternative views are a check on power,” Oloja said.
“They ensure that democracy works for everyone.”
Author Ike Abonyi described his entry into politics as “accidental,” recalling his initial reluctance to join the PDP.
His memoir Wadata Wonders reflects decades of political experience, though, he said, “real wonders couldn’t be published.”

The event became a forum for reflection on Nigeria’s troubled democracy and a renewed call, led by Obi, to build a new Nigeria anchored on values, not personalities.
