Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, lambasted the former Anambra governor, accusing him of distorting history to suit his narrative.
Onanuga took to Facebook to fact-check Obi, stating the Labour Party leader “must have flunked history in school.”
According to Onanuga, Lincoln had already begun his second term when he was assassinated in April 1865.
Kennedy, he added, was tragically cut down in 1963 before completing his first term, while Mandela voluntarily declined a second term due to his advanced age, retiring at 81.
“Obi’s comparison falls apart under basic scrutiny,” Onanuga wrote. “He encourages others to verify facts but fails to do so himself.”
The aide went further, sarcastically suggesting that Mandela’s example might be more suitable for Obi’s opposition rival—who will also be 81 by 2027.
Obi had cited the historical figures to support his commitment to a single presidential term, likely aimed at reassuring voters of his non-entrenchment motives.
But the Peter Obi History Gaffe has handed critics a fresh talking point as Nigeria heads toward a heated 2027 presidential race.
