PDP Warns INEC Against Imposing Leadership

PDP warns INEC against recognising Wike faction, stressing the commission cannot impose party leadership

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against attempting to impose leadership on the party, following a meeting with individuals claiming to represent the party’s National Caretaker Committee.

The warning was issued in a statement on Wednesday by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.

The PDP described the invitees as former members “claiming to represent a National Caretaker Committee,” a body the party says is not recognised under its constitution.

The party warned that such engagement by INEC could escalate tensions and disturb peace but pledged that the matter would be addressed through lawful channels.

The statement criticised the electoral commission for not taking into account pending Court of Appeal cases that could substantially affect the recognition of party leadership.

“The expectation is that an impartial umpire would have exercised restraint, given the pendency of these cases,” the PDP noted, emphasising that INEC does not have the authority to determine or impose leadership on the party.

Comrade Ememobong urged PDP members nationwide to remain calm, assuring that the Court of Appeal would soon hear and resolve all cases related to the party’s leadership.

Reaffirming its internal cohesion, the party reiterated that its ongoing “Rebirth Movement” remains under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

The statement expressed confidence that the PDP would overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger and more united, presenting itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party, which it accused of causing hardship to Nigerians.
