Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has stirred controversy after making a sharp remark about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a televised interview, suggesting he was abroad during Nigeria’s struggle against military rule.

The Olawepo-Hashim Tinubu cognac comment was made during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where the PDP stalwart reflected on the party’s origins and its role in Nigeria’s return to democracy.
Olawepo-Hashim claimed that while pro-democracy activists confronted military regimes, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not present in Nigeria, stating that he was “drinking cognac abroad” at the time.
His remarks quickly drew attention due to their direct reference to the President’s past, adding a new layer of political tension to ongoing debates about Nigeria’s democratic history and the contributions of key figures.
During the interview, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim also recounted his own involvement in the struggle against military rule, referencing the period leading up to the death of former Head of State General Sani Abacha and the activities of pro-democracy groups such as the G-34.
He said many founding members of the PDP were detained during the military era, emphasising what he described as the party’s deep roots in the fight for civilian rule.
