ADC Chair: Low South-East Membership May Hurt Peter Obi Bid

ADC chair warns that low South-East membership registration may hurt Peter Obi’s chances in ADC presidential primary unless numbers improve

The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abia State, Don Norman Obinna, has warned that former presidential candidate Peter Obi could face difficulties securing the party’s presidential ticket if membership registration in the South-East remains low.

Obinna made the statement during the inauguration of executive members of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) in Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Local Government Areas.

He urged supporters of Peter Obi and ADC members in the region to actively participate in the ongoing online e-registration exercise, stressing that voter mobilisation and party membership strength would play a crucial role in determining outcomes at the primaries.

According to him, the current registration figures show significant disparities across states, with Abia reportedly recording about 400,000 registered members compared to around 1 million in Adamawa State.

He questioned whether Peter Obi would be able to secure victory in a presidential primary if such disparities persist, noting that political strength within a party is often determined by membership size and internal mobilisation capacity.

The party chairman emphasised that beyond expressing support for candidates, political followers must actively contribute to strengthening the party’s structure to improve electoral competitiveness.

He also called on members of COPDEM and other political stakeholders to intensify sensitisation efforts and promote good governance and accountability in leadership.

During the same event, COPDEM leaders in Abia State reiterated calls for Nigerians to reject poor governance and support credible leadership ahead of future elections.
