In a strongly worded statement, the Obidient Movement INEC Chairman Resignation demand was accompanied by a call for nationwide protests, as the group accused the electoral commission of losing its neutrality and credibility in the discharge of its constitutional duties.
The movement argued that silence in the face of what it described as institutional decline would amount to complicity, warning Nigerians that the current trajectory poses risks to the country’s multi-party democracy.
It maintained that democratic institutions must remain impartial to retain public trust.
According to the group, the Independent National Electoral Commission, which is expected to act as an unbiased arbiter of electoral processes, is increasingly perceived as compromised under the current political environment.
It warned that such perceptions, whether accurate or not, can undermine confidence in democratic governance.
The statement further alleged that opposition voices are facing mounting pressure, raising concerns about fairness and equal participation within the political space.
The group stressed that when institutions lose credibility, citizens have a responsibility to respond in defence of democratic principles.
Among its key demands, the Obidient Movement called for the immediate resignation of the INEC chairman, citing what it described as gross abuse of office, loss of public trust and failure to uphold neutrality.
It also urged an end to what it termed political persecution, including intimidation and harassment of opposition figures.
The group additionally demanded full respect for party autonomy, insisting that internal matters within political parties, including leadership disputes such as the ADC crisis, should not be influenced by external actors or institutions.
As part of its response, the movement announced plans to launch a nationwide peaceful protest tagged #OccupyINEC across all states and the Federal Capital Territory.
It stated that the demonstrations are intended to defend democratic values and draw attention to what it considers institutional challenges affecting governance.
