Atiku Abubakar to Join ADC, Shaping 2027 Opposition

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is set to join the ADC, strengthening the opposition coalition ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is expected to formally register as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Yola, Adamawa State, on Monday, November 24, 2025, in a move that could significantly influence Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku, who addressed ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa over the weekend, confirmed plans to complete his registration with the coalition party.

Abdul Rasheeth, an aide to the former vice president, disclosed the timeline via his X account on Sunday.

The registration marks a decisive step in the broader opposition realignment, months after Atiku led the adoption of the ADC as a coalition platform for key figures, including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal, to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

Adamawa State ADC Chairman Shehu Yohanna confirmed that Atiku would use his birthday visit to Yola to formalise his membership and collect his party card.

He also suggested other prominent opposition figures may follow suit.

The ADC had earlier clarified the absence of Atiku and Obi from the unveiling of its new national secretariat in Abuja on November 17.

National Chairman David Mark described the building as a symbol of the coalition’s ambition to redefine Nigeria’s political future.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi stressed that there was no disunity within the party, confirming that both Atiku and Obi remained committed to the coalition.

Peter Obi has not yet commented publicly, with his allies indicating that he is evaluating the best path for securing a 2027 presidential ticket.

Atiku’s official registration is expected to reinforce the ADC as a central force within the opposition and potentially reshape alliances as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 polls.
