Nasir El-Rufai Urges Full Adoption of Electronic Voting

Nasir El-Rufai urges INEC to fully adopt electronic voting and real-time result transmission to prevent electoral malpractice in Nigeria’s 2027 elections

Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt electronic voting and real-time result transmission for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in Owerri on September 5, 2025, during an interactive session themed “Moving forward together,” El-Rufai said there was no compelling reason to continue with a system prone to human manipulation.

He highlighted Kaduna State’s successful use of electronic voting during local government elections in 2018 and 2021, emphasizing that INEC has sufficient time to deploy the necessary infrastructure nationwide.

“Can we not agree to say farewell to electoral malfeasance by adopting electronic voting and real-time transmission of results to collation points without interference?” El-Rufai asked.

He explained that electronic voting machines could identify and verify voters, provide a paper trail, automatically shut down at the close of voting, print results for stakeholders at polling units, and transmit results seamlessly to collation centres.

El-Rufai added that implementing such a system would strengthen democratic stability and curb electoral malpractice.

He also recalled that during his tenure, the ruling party accepted losses in some councils under electronic voting, insisting that political will is the main barrier to nationwide implementation.
