House Minority Caucus Probes Alleged Alterations in Gazetted Tax Laws

Nigeria’s House minority caucus claims the 2025 Tax Administration Act was altered by the executive; House leadership calls the probe unofficial

The controversy over four recently gazetted tax laws has intensified as the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives launched a parallel investigation, claiming discrepancies in the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025.

The caucus, led by Hon. Kingsley Chinda, set up a seven-member fact-finding committee to examine alleged alterations between the version passed by the National Assembly and the gazetted copy.

The committee cited differences, including a controversial provision mandating tax computations for petroleum operations in US Dollars instead of the transaction currency.

Hon. Afam Ogene, head of the committee, argued that the changes represent an executive encroachment on legislative powers and demanded further investigation to protect democracy.

The House leadership, through spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi, rejected the caucus-led probe, stating that only committees established through plenary or by the Speaker have institutional authority.

Rotimi emphasized that the minority caucus’s report is non-binding and not part of the official legislative record.

The House had previously constituted a bipartisan ad hoc committee to examine the discrepancies, which issued Certified True Copies of the Acts, concluding the legislative process.
