The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, July 14, 2026, when suspected armed men reportedly stormed the venue where NDC members were gathered, leading to injuries and damage to property.
According to eyewitness accounts cited by the ADC, more than 20 armed individuals arrived at the meeting venue in a bus and allegedly attacked participants while displaying dangerous weapons, including guns and knives.
The party said several people were injured during the incident, while chairs and public address equipment belonging to the NDC were reportedly destroyed.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Owerri, ADC State Publicity Secretary Mac-Donald Amadi described the incident as unacceptable and called on political actors to prioritise peaceful engagement.
“We condemn this barbaric act in the strongest possible terms. We are all brothers and sisters. Imo State is our common home. Politics should not turn us into enemies,” Amadi said.
He warned that political ambition should not come at the cost of human lives, urging stakeholders to embrace democratic values and peaceful competition.
ADC said political contests should be based on ideas, policies and public service rather than intimidation or violence.
“Let us debate issues, not attack persons. Let us campaign with our manifesto, not with weapons,” the party said.
The party also called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law.
The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties and candidates beginning to organise across different states.
