Lagos church attack sparks outrage as ADC accuses APC of acting like a terrorist group after political violence at opposition event
Lagos church attack allegations are heating up Nigeria’s political space, as the African Democratic Congress (ADC)has condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC) over a violent incident at a church venue in Alimosho, Lagos.

In a strongly worded statement, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the ruling party of sponsoring thugs to disrupt a peaceful gathering that included opposition leaders such as Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who had just declared his defection to the ADC.
“The invasion of a church premises by government-backed political thugs is a profound act of desecration,” Abdullahi said.
He likened the ruling party’s behavior to that of terrorist organisations, warning that the violence signals a dangerous decline in Nigeria’s democratic culture.
According to the ADC, the attackers spilled blood, destroyed vehicles, and stole property — all within the sacred grounds of a church.
The party said this was not just political violence, but a direct attack on religious sanctity.
“Attacking places of worship is what terrorists do,” the statement said.
“If churches are no longer inviolable, how does the APC prove it is not what a Canadian court recently called it — a terrorist organisation?”
The party claims this is not an isolated incident. It listed similar cases across several states:
- Edo: Threats against ADC leaders
- Kogi: Harassment of party supporters
- Niger: Shutdown of a private radio station
- Kaduna & Kebbi: Attacks on party meetings and convoys
The ADC also called on the Nigeria Police Force to avoid being used as a tool of the ruling party, and instead act decisively to uphold the constitution.
“The police must ensure that justice is served transparently and swiftly.
The credibility of our institutions is on trial before the whole world,” Abdullahi stated.
The ADC characterized the ruling party’s alleged tactics as a “glaring confession of failure.”
Rather than engage Nigerians with policy achievements, the APC is accused of choosing violence to silence dissent.
“This is the mark of dictatorship,” the statement concluded.
Despite the attacks, the ADC vowed not to be silenced.

The party promised to continue engaging Nigerians peacefully, constructively, and courageously, while demanding that the violence must stop — and it must stop now.
