Kenneth Okonkwo urges Tinubu to resign before the 2027 election, citing insecurity and governance concerns while criticising the Federal Government
African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign before the 2027 general election, arguing that the President should leave office rather than seek another term.

Okonkwo made the statement on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he discussed political developments surrounding the ADC and the legal battle over the party’s registration status.
The former Labour Party spokesperson criticised what he described as efforts to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 election, linking the situation to comments by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, who recently predicted that Tinubu’s re-election would be a “coronation”.
“Everything about this judgment is queued towards frustrating the opposition and trying to coronate Tinubu according to the Minister of Aviation and not elect him in 2027,” Okonkwo said.
He argued that the Tinubu administration had failed to adequately address major national challenges, particularly insecurity, and questioned why Nigerians should support a government that has struggled with persistent security concerns.
Okonkwo said insecurity remained a daily reality in several parts of the country, citing attacks and kidnappings across states including Plateau, Benue and Oyo.
“In Plateau, in Benue people are massacred in their numbers, people are beheaded in Oyo State and they want you to praise them for what they would have prevented,” he stated.
The ADC chieftain also shared a personal account involving the alleged kidnapping of his employee’s mother in Kaduna State, saying the incident reflected the wider security challenges facing Nigerians.
He claimed the victim’s family struggled to meet ransom demands and that the woman suffered physical harm during the ordeal.
According to Okonkwo, leadership should focus more on preventing insecurity rather than responding after lives have been lost.
“Life and the destruction of life is better prevented than cured because when somebody is killed, it’s final,” he said.
He concluded by urging the President to step aside before the next election, saying: “Tinubu should not even allow the election to hold, he should resign and go in peace.”

The comments come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties challenging the APC-led government over economic conditions, security and governance, while ruling party officials continue to defend Tinubu’s record and express confidence in his re-election prospects.
