Kebbi religious leaders prayer call urges President Tinubu to declare a national day of fasting for divine help to end banditry in Northern Nigeria

Kebbi religious leaders prayer call has drawn national attention after prominent clerics and pastors urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a national day of prayer and fasting for divine intervention to end the growing menace of armed banditry across Northern Nigeria.

The appeal came during a special interfaith prayer session held on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi, organised by the state government as part of Governor Nasir Idris’ ongoing efforts to confront insecurity through both spiritual and strategic approaches.

It was the fifth in a series of statewide prayer gatherings, uniting Islamic and Christian leaders from diverse sects and denominations in a rare display of interfaith solidarity.

Addressing the congregation, Governor Idris reaffirmed his administration’s determination to restore lasting peace and stability, describing the joint worship as “a symbol of Nigeria’s enduring unity in diversity.”

“When we come together to pray and act as one people, we strengthen our shared commitment to peace, justice, and security,” he said, encouraging communities to continue the prayers at local levels.

Among those who led the Muslim faithful were Sheikh Abdulrahaman Isah Jega, Sheikh Abbas Muhammadu Jega, Sheikh Umar Malisa, and Sheikh Abubakar Ribah. On the Christian side, Rev. Femi Oropin of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kebbi led the session alongside Rev. Nuhu Mamman Gudul, Rev. Joshua Ochimana, and Justice (rtd.) Mairiga.

During the event, the faith leaders passed a vote of confidence in Governor Idris, praising his “unwavering commitment” to ending banditry in Kebbi and neighbouring states. They cited his proactive engagements with security stakeholders, including the Northern Traditional Rulers Council and the Progressive Governors Forum.

Governor Idris’ administration, they noted, has strengthened security operations with the distribution of 100 Hilux patrol vehicles and 5,000 motorcycles to improve surveillance and rapid response in rural communities.

In a joint resolution, the clerics urged President Tinubu to mobilise a nationwide interfaith prayer movement, saying divine intervention was vital alongside ongoing military and policy measures.

“Security is beyond government alone,” they declared. “It requires the hand of God and the unity of all Nigerians.”
