Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Sunday, flagged off the distribution of 5.5 million tree seedlings at the historic Yanbawa Shelter Belt in Makoda LGA, a site dating back to 1972.
The initiative, part of the state’s broader sustainability agenda, seeks to revive shelter belts and green spaces once abandoned.
The seedlings, according to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, will be shared across all 44 local government areas and distributed to schools, religious centres, and public institutions.
“This marks a turning point for environmental protection in Kano,” Governor Yusuf said. “We’re restoring what was neglected and laying foundations for a greener, healthier future.”
He announced the rehabilitation of two major tree nurseries in Gwarzo and Garko LGAs and directed LG chairmen to set up Tree Planting Committees.
More than 250,000 hectares of land have also been reclaimed under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project — a key climate intervention.
Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo praised the religious and ecological importance of tree planting, while Commissioner for Environment Dr. Dahiru Hashim noted this year’s distribution represents a significant increase from last year’s 3 million seedlings.
Hon. Jamilu Dambatta and Hon. Auwal Isa Jibga pledged strong support from their respective LGAs, while two Kano natives — Engr. Muntari Sulaiman and Dr. Abdulhamid Bala Sarauniya — were honoured for their contributions to environmental conservation.
