2027: Jigawa PDP Rules Out Defections, Restates Party Unity

Jigawa PDP rejects defection rumours, reaffirms unity and loyalty ahead of 2027 elections, pledging discipline and strong party mobilisation

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State have dismissed reports of potential defections by senior party members, reaffirming their commitment to remain within the party and contest the 2027 general elections under its platform.

The position was reached during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Dutse on Sunday, where party leaders, elders and members declared renewed unity and loyalty to the PDP amid rising political realignments across the country.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the stakeholders urged all aspirants seeking elective positions to promptly obtain nomination forms from the party secretariat in Dutse, ahead of the stipulated deadline for sales and submission.

They emphasised the importance of early preparation, internal discipline and collective responsibility, noting that strict adherence to party guidelines would ensure a smooth, credible and orderly primary election process.

A key highlight of the meeting was the reaffirmation of loyalty to former Jigawa State Governor, Dr Sule Lamido, whom stakeholders described as a stabilising figure and a symbol of grassroots political strength within the party structure.

Party speakers at the gathering pledged continued support for Dr Sule Lamido’s leadership, urging members to remain united and focused on the PDP’s long-standing political ideals.

The meeting comes amid earlier speculation that the PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 general election, Mustapha Lamido, was considering a defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move widely believed could have altered the political balance in the state.

However, it was gathered that the proposed move did not materialise after discussions reportedly failed to produce an agreement between the concerned parties.

With the latest resolution, stakeholders insisted that speculation around defections had been effectively put to rest, describing it as unfounded and distracting.

Jigawa PDP Chairman Babandi Ibrahim assured members of a fair and transparent internal process, promising inclusiveness in all party activities leading up to the 2027 elections.

He called on members across the state to strengthen unity and mobilisation efforts, expressing confidence that the PDP remains well-positioned for electoral success.
