June 12 protests questioned by Oduduwa Integrity Association amid calls for unity, prayer

Oduduwa Integrity Association questions the motives behind June 12 protests in Nigeria, urging Yorubas to honour Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s legacy through unity and prayer, not demonstrations

June 12 protests across Nigeria, especially those organised by demonstrators from Yorubaland, have come under scrutiny from the Oduduwa Integrity Association.

In a statement released on Monday, the association questioned the true intentions behind the protests ahead of the annual June 12 commemoration.

The group urged protesters to clarify whether their actions support or undermine the significance of June 12  the date that honours Nigeria’s democratic struggle and the sacrifices of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola.

“Can the protesters in Nigeria, especially from Yorubaland, tell us what exactly they are protesting against?” the association asked.

“Have you forgotten that Abiola died for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria? He paved the way for Olusegun Obasanjo to become president and for other leaders like Jonathan and even leaders from the North to assume office under democratic rule.”

Expressing concern that some demonstrators may be exploiting the commemoration for personal recognition rather than honouring Abiola’s legacy, the association added:

“Some people call themselves radicals and activists, but it seems like you’re just looking for an avenue for your name and picture to be seen. What are you really protesting for?”

The Oduduwa Integrity Association called for unity and reflection on June 12, urging Nigerians to stay home and pray for forgiveness of national sins and inequities.

“Abiola’s death is a reminder of the sacrifices made for democracy,” the statement continued. “Because Abiola was killed, God is angry with Nigeria.

Any Yoruba person planning a protest is not a true son or daughter of Yorubaland. Our son is in office today, so instead of protesting, we should pray for Nigeria and the government. We must not allow Abiola’s efforts to be in vain.”

With tensions high across several states, and various groups preparing demonstrations, security agencies have appealed for peaceful and orderly conduct, reminding citizens of the day’s importance.

Hon Omotoso Banji, President of the Oduduwa Integrity Association, reiterated the call for unity prayers, stating:
