Rivers ADC Backs Consensus Method for Candidate Selection

ADC consensus candidate plan considered in Rivers State as party chairman Chukwudi Dimkpa outlines flexible approach to candidate selection

The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State, Chukwudi Dimkpa, on Monday, April 27, 2026, in Port Harcourt, outlined the party’s evolving approach to candidate selection, stating that the ADC is considering a consensus-based system while retaining the option of direct primaries where necessary.

Chukwudi Dimkpa explained that the proposed approach aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act, which allows political parties to determine their preferred method of selecting candidates.

He said the party views consensus as a more efficient and unifying method, noting that it helps reduce internal disputes, lower campaign costs, and strengthen cohesion before elections.

According to Dimkpa, the ADC is adopting what he described as a flexible and inclusive strategy that prioritises party unity while still safeguarding democratic choice.

He, however, stressed that the party would not hesitate to adopt direct primaries if consensus efforts fail to produce a widely acceptable candidate.

“Consensus builds unity early and it also avoids post-primary issues that often arise. But we are open to picking the best,” Dimkpa said. “If we cannot achieve consensus, we will definitely be on the field doing direct primaries.”

The Rivers State chairman also emphasised that the ADC is positioning itself as a people-centred political platform, distinct from parties dominated by entrenched political interests.

He noted that the party is working to expand participation by giving ordinary members and residents a greater voice in the selection process, describing the approach as a shift towards broader democratic inclusion.

Dimkpa added that candidates with strong grassroots backing are often more resilient in elections, as they already enjoy public acceptance and reduced vulnerability to manipulation.

He further described the ADC’s internal structure as one designed to empower younger politicians and women, ensuring greater access to leadership opportunities within the party.

According to him, the party is committed to building what he described as a more open and transparent political culture, aimed at strengthening trust between leaders and the electorate.
