Fubara May Join New Party Ahead of 2027, Analyst Claims

Analyst Femi Otubanjo says Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara may defect to a new party ahead of 2027 but could face political challenges

A director of research at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Femi Otubanjo, has suggested that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara may consider leaving his current political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, Otubanjo said the governor could emerge as a strong contender if he joins the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.

The comment has added fresh attention to ongoing discussions around possible realignments in Rivers State politics as the 2027 election cycle approaches.

According to Otubanjo, the governor may face significant political challenges if he defects while 28 lawmakers opposed to him remain in office.

He described the situation as politically delicate, warning that internal opposition could weaken Fubara’s influence if not resolved.

Otubanjo also said Fubara’s current political crisis was unfortunate, adding that the governor had a role in the circumstances that led to the ongoing tensions.

He linked the situation to earlier political arrangements that shaped Fubara’s emergence as governor under the influence of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The analyst argued that shifting alliances could further complicate governance in Rivers State if not carefully managed.
