Ekiti Police Probe ADC Secretariat Attack

Police launch investigation into Ekiti ADC secretariat attack. Rauf Aregbesola condemns arson as undemocratic, urges protection of democratic freedoms.

The Ekiti State Police Command has opened an investigation into the Monday night attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Ado-Ekiti, pledging to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The incident occurred just hours before the scheduled inauguration of the party’s state executives on Tuesday, October 21, leading to the destruction of party property and a fire that consumed part of the building.

Spokesperson for the police command, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the development, stating that the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale probe.

“An investigation is underway to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Abutu told journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.

Reacting to the violence, ADC National Secretary and former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, described the attack as “undemocratic, unfortunate, and shameful.”

Aregbesola, who arrived in Ado-Ekiti after the incident, condemned the destruction of property and disruption of a lawful political event, calling it an affront to the principles of democracy.

“It is unfortunate and shameful that products of the democratic process can exhibit such a despicable act in the name of politics,” he said.

“The beauty of democracy lies in freedom of association and peaceful participation in political activities, including rallies and meetings.”

He called on security agencies to act swiftly to secure lives, property, and democratic rights in the state, warning that continued tolerance of political violence could erode public trust.

The ADC secretariat, located on the Basiri/Ilesa Road, was vandalised and set ablaze by unknown assailants late Monday night. Properties destroyed include:

  •  Plastic chairs and wooden tables
  • Party canopies
  •  Musical equipment
  •  Motorbikes
  •  Office files and electronics

The attack has been widely condemned by residents and political observers, especially as the party was preparing to formally launch its state leadership structure.

Despite the setback, the ADC went ahead with the affirmation and inauguration of state executives, led by State Chairman Mr Ilesanmi Omolayo.

Speaking at the event, Omolayo called on party members to remain resolute.
