ADC Leadership Crisis Deepens as INEC Refuses to Recognize David Mark-led Committee

The ADC leadership crisis escalates as INEC refuses to recognize the David Mark-led caretaker committee, maintaining the old executive led by Ralph Okey Nwosu

The ADC leadership crisis has intensified following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) refusal to recognize the party’s newly formed caretaker committee led by former Senate President David Mark.

Despite the African Democratic Congress’s (ADC) National Executive Committee (NEC) endorsing a new leadership structure in July 2025, INEC continues to list the party’s old executive led by Ralph Okey Nwosu as the legitimate leadership on its official portal.

This non-recognition casts doubt on the David Mark faction’s authority within the party.

The caretaker committee, featuring notable figures such as former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, was unveiled amid plans to reinvigorate the ADC.

However, INEC’s refusal to update its records has fueled controversy and uncertainty.

State chairmen of the ADC have vehemently condemned the David Mark-led coalition, describing it as an “illegitimate junta” attempting to hijack the party through unconstitutional and undemocratic means.

In a joint statement, they denounced the faction’s actions as a reckless subversion of democratic values and a threat to the party’s stability.

The chairmen accused the group of backdoor dealings and selfish political ambitions, urging Nigerians and civil society to resist the takeover.

They reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and peaceful political engagement.

Meanwhile, founding APGA chairman Dr. Chekwas Okorie supported INEC’s stance, noting that Ralph Nwosu’s chairmanship remains legally valid pending a formal national convention.

Okorie dismissed claims of external influence on INEC and called for proper procedural handover through a convention monitored by the electoral body.

This internal crisis unfolds as other parties like the Labour Party also grapple with leadership disputes and allegations of INEC interference.

Civil society groups have called on INEC to enforce electoral laws strictly and prevent premature political campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ADC leadership crisis underscores the challenges political parties face in maintaining unity and adhering to democratic principles amid Nigeria’s complex political landscape.

The resolution of this dispute will be critical for the party’s future credibility and influence.
