Abia State unveils key development projects across sector

Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, briefed journalists on Monday, revealing a suite of interventions designed to enhance quality of life, youth empowerment, and institutional capacity across the state.

Top on the list is the now operational engineering materials testing laboratory, equipped for advanced testing of concrete, soil, asphalt, aggregates, and steel reinforcements.

It also supports non-destructive and field testing.

“The installation of this lab will ensure very high quality of engineering and building projects in the state. That is the very essence of its establishment,” Kanu stated.

He added that the facility had been fully installed and was ready to support ongoing and future infrastructure works.

In the digital sector, Kanu confirmed that preparations for the second cohort of the Abia ICT training programme were near completion.

Verification of 850 applicants has been finalised, and training is set to begin on 25 September.

“This programme will increase the state’s digital workforce, empower youths, and generally enhance job creation,” Kanu noted.

Nineteen participants from the first cohort were reportedly given automatic employment, with new trainees encouraged to mentor peers within their communities.

In agriculture, the government announced the launch of the Ease Agricultural Intervention Project in collaboration with local councils.

The initiative will see the construction of prototype markets in all 17 LGAs, each fitted with 40 open stalls, solar-powered lighting, boreholes, public conveniences, and charging stations.

“The project will expand local trade, promote rural entrepreneurship, reduce rural-urban migration, and improve access to fresh produce,” Kanu said.

In the health sector, 25 of 33 targeted primary healthcare centres have now been “functionalised,” with 42 PHCs equipped to date.

Eight more centres are expected to be completed this week, moving the state closer to its goal of functionalising 200 PHCs.

Meanwhile, in sports, the ongoing Abia Soccer Fest has moved past its community-level knockout rounds, with area championships now underway.

The competition is designed to empower youth, discover talent, and promote community cohesion through sport.

On infrastructure recovery, Kanu disclosed that the state was in the advanced stages of revitalising Abia Hotels Limited in Umuahia as part of its plan to reclaim and restore underperforming state assets.

“The recovery process is ongoing, and further details will be made public in due course,” he said.
